​Something that I've started writing about recently is how the environment can affect our health in unknown ways. Try writing a poem that questions the cause of your loss. Looking to a greater, uncontrollable force as the cause can make a powerful statement.

Write a persona poem or dramatic monologue. Take a step outside of yourself and write from the perspective of someone else. Speaking in the voice of someone else, real or fictional, gives you an interesting new perspective from which to write about your loss.

Here's an example of a pantoum I wrote about my youngest brother's diagnosis of cardiomyopathy. By coincidence, the U.S. Hostage situation in Tehran at the American Embassy occurred on the exact day that my brother fell ill. He read the newspaper's headlines every day and used the count of the day's in captivity, which were large, banner headlines every day, to count the days of his illness.
